Rei Kawakubo | Comme des Garçons

One of my favorite fashion designers is Rei Kawakubo, she designs and makes clothes under Comme des Garçons. She is a self-taught, Japanese fashion designer. She studied fine art and literature, worked in a textiles company and also worked as a freelance stylist for a while. In 1973, Rei Kawakubo established Comme des Garçons Co. Ltd., and opened the first boutique about two years later. Comme des Garçons has been said to have “challenged the established notions of beauty”, which I think is stunning and extremely inspiring, “challenging the establishe notions of beauty”.

In the 80’s, devoted “followers” of her clothes were nicknamed “crows”. In 1981, Rei Kawakubo started showing in Paris, and opened a boutique in 1982. Journalists had labeled her clothes “Hiroshima chic”, amongst other things.

Reclusive Rei is one of those designers whose work is so prestigious that she inspires complete awe, and she is just so mysterious, which almost comes through to the clothes she designs.
Rei Kawakubo is quite media shy, and prefer that her innovative creations to speak for themselves, which I personally think they do!

//“I guess it's because I endeavor to make clothes that didn't exist before.” //

Rei Kawakubo is a member of the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter. She approaches fashion as an art form, which I think is exactly what it is, an art form, although I also think that fashion isn’t art.
Fashion is a form of art, a means of expression. They have different purposes, and in some aspects almost compliment each other. But I don’t think that they need to be compared.

//“I like to shop at airports, because I don’t have time to shop.”//

Polyvore set I made about Rei Kawakubo.
